This week's post will be focused on EdTech Leadership. My personal definition for an EdTech Leader is a person who brings together technology and educational theory to enhance student learning. Some specific roles and responsibilities that are associated with the EdTech Leader position. First and foremost, EdTech Leaders are expected to be role models. We must not only understand how technology can be used as a resource, but also be able and willing apply this knowledge to our daily lives. We must stay up-to-date and active with both the online resources and educational processes. Another responsibility that I find worth mentioning is developing a goal. I suggest starting with a small technology vision and gradually allowing yourself to grow into something more complex as you further you knowledge and experience.
I would now like to touch on some characteristics of EdTech Leadership. Although this is a topic I could go on and on about, I am going to simplify the list to only three: Adaptable, Innovative, and Reflective. Technology is constantly evolving; therefore EdTech leaders must be comfortable with change and willing to Adapt to the needs of the students. As educators, we are expected to be life long learners. We cannot expect our students to want to learn outdated content on outdated devices. EdTech Leadership requires us to stay connected. The best way to stay connected is by asking questions and looking for Innovative solutions.
Educators are looking to utilize their resources to their maximum potentials. The best methods do not always come easily, and we often must use trial and error along with communication to find what works well with our classroom/coursework. This can be done through community sharing and networking with colleagues, students, experts, etc., which leads me to the last characteristic of Reflection.
It is crucial to step back from the chaos and examine why you are using technology in the first place. As an educator, are you more focused on technology and online tools than your own teaching pedagogy? Are you considering how the integration of tech in the classroom is affecting your students? These are just a few suggestions on how to take a deeper look at your EdTech Leadership.
I see my future career aligning with the role of an EdTech Leader because I intend on using the resources available to best meet the needs of my students. I will be sure to step back from my practice to analyze not only my students' work, but also look at my own teaching methods. I plan on sharing what works as well as what does not work with my education network, and I will look to them when looking for solutions to the tech struggles I may be facing.
